mp-blanketEasy Baby Blanket,  3 hours, $35 includes kit

A collection of blankets is a necessity for any well-stocked layette, and this cute reversible design will allow you to make several in record time. Two layers of flannel are attached along the edges with a three-thread overlock stitch using decorative pearl rayon thread; the corners are easily turned using a serger technique. The flannels are of different colors, and contrasting thread is used in the loopers; the result is a colorful border on each side and a crochet-look edging.

Martha-Pullen-boy-bibBaby Boy Bib, 3 hours, includes kit

A decidedly tailored look makes this practical bib suitable for little boys. The bib is made functional and absorbent by a layer of padding in the center, while the outside is a decorative feast for the eyes. A central “tuxedo” band is embellished with rolled hem serger pintucks, embroidered insertion, and three babyish pearl buttons. For quick construction and a neat finished look, the edges are finished using a binder and cover stitch or chain stitch.

Baby Girl Bib, 3 hours, $35 includes kit

This beautiful garment combines the signature touches of heirloom sewing with the speed and ease of heirloom serging using a three-thread rolled hem. Lace-edged bands of embroidered insertion run the length of the bodice, culminating in a strip of ribbon-laced bridging at the waistline. The skirt is embellished with a traditional fancy band of lace and embroidered insertions, and the hem features a lace-edged fabric ruffle. The puffed sleeves and neck edge are finished with ruffled lace.

mp-flannel-bonnettFlannel Baby Bonnet, 3 hours, $35 includes kit

Soft flannel and pearl rayon thread combine to create this adorable little bonnet for girls or boys. A rolled hem stitch with the rayon thread is the perfect edge finish, and three rows of decorative flatlock are also stitched with the rayon. The back edge folds forward to create a casing; the boy’s casing is strictly functional, while a deeper fold creates a feminine little ruffle. Both versions are finished with a turned back brim and silk satin ribbon ties.

mp-knit-jacket-gownKnit Baby Jacket and Gown, 6 hours, $ 40 supply list available

Layer this precious little jacket over the matching gown for an adorable outfit. Cotton knit is soft and cuddly, and perfect for serging. Inside seams are finished flawlessly, ribbing at the neck and sleeves of the gown can be attached almost instantly, and lettuce edging makes a decorative hem finish on both garments. A

touch of elegance is added by the sheen of silk satin ribbon that is used to tie the jacket at the neck; the ribbon also runs along the front opening edges and sleeve edges. The pattern is a basic raglan-sleeve style, so construction couldn’t be easier.

A yoke overlay is embellished with a center panel of luscious silk satin ribbon, lace insertion, and embroidered insertion that is further enhanced by ribbon woven through eyelet holes to make flowers. Rolled hem serger pintucks are worked in rayon thread to border the center panel; the neck, sleeveless armholes, and yoke overlay are edged in lace. The softly gathered waltz-length skirt is tucked across the bottom and finished with lace edging.

Martha-Pullen-decorator-pillowDecorator Pillow, 6 hours, $40  supply list available

This chic pillow is actually a study in decorative serger techniques. A band of serger pintucks mimic the look of folded tucks, and a strip of piping inserted by serger separates two fabric panels; cover stitch is used as topstitching on a narrow band with turned edges, and decorative chain stitch creates a diamond grid in contrasting thread. The resulting look is very stylish and easy to accomplish. The lapped back edges are also cover stitched.

Decorative as well as functional, this is a perfect gift project. Pretty fashion fabric is used on the outside; serger chain stitch creates a grid design and attaches the front to a layer of padding. Exposed zippers are inserted into the flannel lining by serger to create six roomy pockets. The front is attached to the lining with piping inserted between the layers, and an attached, elasticized band wraps around to secure the roll for storage.
